Ware River is looking for a dedicated Special Education Registered Nurse for a new and exciting opportunity in San Felipe Elementary School!

To be considered for this position, a candidate must have the following:

  • Current New Mexico State Licensure as a Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor’s degree with license
  • Current CPR certification (Maintenance of certification while employed) / AED
  • Experience working with school age children staff, parents/guardians, and physicians

As a Special Education RN, you will:

  • Clinical: The primary emphasis is assisting and maintaining an optimal level of "health" through established District/medical policies and practices for all students through:
  • Hands on student assistance once student arrives on campus.
  • Direct hands-on student assistance when the student arrives on campus at 8:20am and leaves campus at 2:00pm, M/T/TH/F.
  • Direct hands-on student assistance when the student arrives on campus at 8:20am and leaves campus at 12:00pm, Wednesdays.
  • Develop, update, and maintain health related policies, protocols, and procedures based on evidencebased research, standards of care, and with input from the Medical Advisor and associated
  • committees/boards.
  • Perform nursing tasks consistent with medical plan and IEP for one-on-one student.
  • Provide emergency care of student illness or injury and in procedures of emergency care.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and children regarding health problems with cultural competence.
  • Participate in student evaluations and develop student health care plans for students with significant chronic health needs in an IEP or 504 plan.
  • Refer emergency situations to parents, physicians, and hospitals, referring non-emergency situations to parents and appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain connections with community agencies, schools, and families to provide on-going health support.
  • Support wellness and health activities to improve and maintain a healthy school environment.
  • Assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • While maintaining student confidentiality, act as a resource for teaching staff in appropriate medical processes and/or procedures.
  • Initiate teaching of nursing tasks to staff members.
  • Act as a resource person to staff members for materials pertaining to various health units.
  • Monitor students' health status during periods of short-term rest or recovery; follow up on medically excused absences as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the district administrator based on the one-on-one student and their IEP
  • Perform other responsibilities based on the individual student’s IEP.
